Unfortunately, I think you’ll risk the chips being unsalvageably soggy in that situation.

What I’d do to make this work for your needs – instead of layering the casserole exactly like we’ve described, keep the chips out completely, but layer the rest of the ingredients as instructed. Just before you bake the casserole, crush some of the chips and spread them across the top of the dish. That way you still get some of that delicious crunch in the casserole itself.

I’d also serve it with whole tortilla chips, so your guests have the option of eating the casserole kind of like nachos.
